The Indian Nations Tracking Club of Oklahoma had our May 4, 2008 tracking test at our new location just east of Broken Arrow, OK. The site is absolute breathtaking. The base camp was in a large gazebo/boat dock on a large pond with 2 pet geese that stayed in the water the entire test or on their little island on the pond. All of the tracks were set on gently sloping hills that were very spectator friendly. The weather was just perfect: few clouds, temps in the mid to high 60's with a gentle northern breeze to cool everyone off.
We offered 6 TD's and 3 TDX's. We had 7 TD entries and 4 TDX entrants. We had 4 TD passes and 1 TDX pass. I was unable to see how most of the tracks were laid, but did see most of the tracks run.
TD 1 was run by a German Wire Haired Pointer bitch from Wisconsin who worked the track like a pro. She never hesitated on any of the turns and the handler just had to hang on to the line and stay with her to the glove. Congratulations to Carol Cagle and Pryor Creek's Gracie Mae, RAE, SH, CDX, NA, NAJ, CGC, and now TD. Bob Brown certified this dog. Carol had only one tracking lesson and said she had worked her dog only 4 weeks. Amazing!
TD 2 was run by a Basset Hound bitch who caught sight of her car across the field and broke off to go towards it on the next to the last leg. She worked very well until then and I'm sure she will title soon.
TD 3 was run by an Australian Shepherd bitch from Louisiana who worked the track all the way to the glove. The dog seemed to not have any trouble finding the track or glove. Congratulations to Shelly Spotswood and Wonderdog R Ewe Speakin to Me, CDX, HSBs, HXAsd, MX, MXJ and now TD. P. Kay Watson certified this dog.
TD 4 was run by another Basset Hound dog from Texas who tracked like he was on rails all the way to the glove. The dog had no obvious problems and was intent on doing his job. He was thrilled to finally find the tracklayer (me) and give her the glove. Congratulations to Freda Burks and CH Southlake Easy Rawlins now TD. This dog was certified by Debra Duncan.
TD 5 was run by a Vizsla dog from Oklahoma who started out a little wobbly but soon settled into the track and aced it all the way to the glove. This dog is an excellent tracker and just drags his handler down the track like a freight train. Congratulations to Jennifer Maynard Sell and Hilldale's Blue Argonaut now TD. This dog was certified by Bob Brown.
TD 6 was run by a Cardigan Welsh Corgi dog who didn't start well and never really got going after the directional flag. Since the dog was not used to our type of terrain, it probably had a hard time making the adjustment. I'm sure that the next time he will pass.
TDX 1 was run by a Belgian Tervuran bitch who worked the first couple of legs and an obstacle, but went passed the turn after the obstacle to the whistle. The dog tried several times to come back to the turn, but could not convince the handler. I'm sure that this dog will pass soon too.
TDX 2 was run by a Dalmatian bitch from Texas who ran (literally) the entire track like she'd seen the map. She found all the articles and just blew through the obstacles. Congratulations to Thomas Hacholski and Tilbury's Cinnamon Splash of Pal, TD and now TDX.
TDX 3 was run by a Great Pyrenees dog who started well and slowly trotted down the first couple of legs, but turned the wrong way at the turn and went into the woods. The judges stood outside of the woods at the turn until they decided that she was too far off track and out of sight. They blew one whistle and went into the woods to look for the dog and handler, but could not find them. In the meantime, the dog and handler appeared coming out of the woods about halfway down the next leg. So then the tracklayer and photographer had to find the judges to tell them and they decided to let her finish the track since she really wasn't as far off track as they thought. By then the dog was getting hot, but he made a valiant effort to finish the track and made another wrong turn in the open to the whistle. I'm sure that this dog will get his title soon as there was no quit in him even though he was totally exhausted and somewhat overheated at the end of the track. The handler iced him down and he is fine now.
All in all, everyone had a wonderful time and I lost count of how many people said that they could just stay there forever. The submarine sandwiches, soup, brownies, pineapple upside down cake, chocolate cake, cookies, etc. were wonderful and just sitting around was so pleasant that everyone stayed longer than usual. We had a professional photographer at this test who was allowed to walk with the judges on each track and snap pictures which he offered for sale at $20 a CD.
The entire weekend was fun for everyone. The place was so peaceful and lovely and the people were so happy and friendly. Just a dream tracking weekend.
